About the Host
Samir (Sam) Patel, has the eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa, a hereditary retinal disease causing a gradual deterioration of vision leading to partial or complete blindness. He was diagnosed in 2015 and is now legally blind. As the progression of his condition affected him, he made significant changes to both his professional and personal life.
In his professional career, Sam initially worked in the business sector, primarily focusing on real estate. However, he later transitioned into the field of web development and startups. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, he redirected his professional skills toward accessibility testing. By collaborating with companies, he aims to enhance their understanding of the needs and requirements of individuals with low vision or blindness. Through this work, he aspires to contribute to the creation of more inclusive and accessible web and digital products.
An enthusiastic traveler at heart, Sam possesses a deep passion for exploration and learning. He has ventured to all seven continents, engaging in remarkable experiences such as hiking the Inca Trail, crossing the Antarctic Circle, and even cage diving with Great White sharks. As his vision gradually fades, Sam remains determined to maintain an active lifestyle and recently joined the Blind Stokers Bike Club. The club offers biking, hiking, climbing, and various other activities tailored to visually impaired and blind individuals. Sam draws inspiration and motivation from this group to continue his quest for adventure and personal growth. That being said, he is thankful for a wife that encourages and supports his endeavors and keeps their life active.
Sam is creating the Smashing Blind podcast to inspire and empower others. The essence of the show lies in exploring the process of discovering inner strength, energy, and motivation to overcome the challenges we face in the low-vision and blind community. He hopes together we can keep Smashing Blind and live life to its fullest.
